Language Placement
Korean Language Placement Test 2023-24
All first-year students, transfer students and returning students who have either studied Korean before or have prior exposure to Korean at home, and plan to fulfill the language requirement or to continue their study of Korean. This rule applies to all students in all schools and programs, including graduate programs and professional schools. Students must take the online placement test and the validation test before registering for courses.
Who needs to take the Korean placement test?
- Students who want to use Korean language to satisfy the Weinberg and the School of Communication’s two-year foreign language requirement.
- Students who have prior exposure to Korean at home or other contexts.
- Students who have prior experiences in any of speaking, listening, reading, or writing of Korean.
- Students who have come back from study abroad and need to be placed into an appropriate level of Korean.
- Students who have transferred from other universities and want to continue to take Korean at Northwestern.
What does the Korean placement test look like?
There are two forms in the placement test: Online test and Validation test.
- The online placement test consists of four sections: vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening.
- The validation test consists of two parts: writing and speaking.
When and where will the Korean placement test take place?
- Online test: https://placement.madstudio.northwestern.edu/
- NOTE new information as of Aug 28: All students need to take the online test by September 10thand the test will be opened from September 1st to September 10th. Once you enter the test, you have to finish it within 2 hours since you will not be allowed to enter again. The online test result will initially show as “Validation Required” since the validation test is required to complete the placement process.
- NEW DATE: Validation test: Time: September 13th, 3pm-5pm, Place: University Hall 121
- Please come to the place 10 minutes early with your student ID and pens.
- You must finish the online test prior to arriving for the validation test.
- Special notes
The placement result is effective only for one year, and students are not allowed to retake the test within a year.
