The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures offers an education in the languages, cultures, and literatures of Asia.  Students will acquire linguistic and transcultural competence in one or more regions of Asia as a dynamic site of international cultural relations.

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures offers an education in the languages, cultures, and literatures of Asia.  Students will acquire linguistic and transcultural competence in one or more regions of Asia and learn to better appreciate Asia as a dynamic site of international cultural relations.  A few of our students share their reasons for studying Asian languages and cultures and what they gained from the experience.

Alumnae Award for Curriculum Innovation

Eun Hee Kim and Chin-Hung Chang have been named the 2024 recipients of the Alumnae of Northwestern University’s Award for Curriculum Innovation.

Kim and Chang plan to enhance Korean and Chinese language learning with a conversational chatbot that will help students practice outside the classroom.

The World in Words: Travel Writing and the Global Imagination in Muslim South Asia

Daniel Majchrowicz's new book shows how Urdu travel writing gave voice to a global imagination that reflected the ambition and aspiration of Indians and Pakistanis as they negotiated their place in the changing world of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Laura Brueck honored for collaboration, mentorship and promotion of global intellectual engagement. Given annually by the Office of the Provost, the award recognizes full-time faculty members who provide outstanding service to the University or significant contributions to their individual units and are exemplars of good academic citizenship.

Presented by Aao Mil Baithen in partnership with the Race, Caste, and Colorism project and supported by Northwestern University’s Buffett Institute for Global Affairs.  The community enjoyed six weeks of art-making, creative workshops, film screenings, performances, music + a reading nook and listening stations.  It was a huge success!
