Korean Language Faculty Member — Position Description

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Northwestern University invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure track teaching faculty position for the Korean language program, to begin on September 1, 2014.

Duties include teaching nine quarter-long courses for both heritage and non-heritage learners, and working closely with the Korean language program coordinator for curriculum development and enhancement material development.
Minimum qualifications include a Master’s degree in foreign/second language pedagogy, second language acquisition, or a related field (Ph.D. is preferred); native or near-native proficiency in both Korean and English; teaching experience in U.S. higher education; experience in teaching both non-heritage and heritage learners of Korean.
Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in developing foreign language curricula, and who are familiar with the ACTFL proficiency guidelines and current foreign/second language pedagogical practices commonly used in North American institutions of higher education.

The candidate will join three currently tenured faculty members in late imperial Chinese literature, modern Japanese literature, and contemporary Hindi literature respectively, and fourteen continuing lecturer faculty in the Chinese-, Hindi-, Japanese-, and Korean-languages in the newly-formed (Fall 2013) Department of Asian Languages and Cultures.

As a new member of a growing department, the candidate should bring excellence in teaching, as well as enthusiasm and creativity in developing undergraduate curricula, and establishing departmental governance.
