Hindi-Urdu Language Faculty Member — Position Description

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Northwestern University invites applications for a full time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure track teaching faculty position for the Hindi-Urdu Language Program, to begin on September 1, 2014. The term of appointment will be two years, with the possibility of an extension to a third year. The successful candidate will work with existing faculty in Hindi language and literature and must be able to teach elementary to advanced Hindi and Urdu language courses.

Duties include teaching nine quarter-long courses for both heritage and non-heritage learners, and working closely with the Hindi- Urdu language program coordinator for curriculum and material development/enhancement.

Minimum qualifications include a Master’s degree (Ph.D. is preferred); native or near-native proficiency in Hindi, Urdu, and English; teaching experience in U.S. higher education; experience in teaching both non-heritage and heritage learners of Hindi and Urdu. Preference will be given to those candidates who also demonstrate ability to teach literature and culture courses in translation. Rank will be commensurate with education.

The candidate will join three currently tenured faculty members and two junior tenure line faculty in late imperial and modern Chinese literature, modern Japanese literature, and contemporary Hindi literature respectively, and fourteen continuing lecturer faculty in the Chinese-, Hindi-Urdu, Japanese-, and Korean-languages in the newly-formed (Fall 2013) Department of Asian Languages and Cultures. As a new member of a growing department, the candidate should bring excellence in teaching, as well as enthusiasm and creativity in developing undergraduate curricula, and establishing departmental governance.
